Envoy Gateway: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Envoy Gateway is an open-source gateway for application and API traffic. It manages Envoy Proxy instances, implements and extends the Kubernetes Gateway API, and can be run as a standalone gateway or as a gateway on Kubernetes. Administrators configure routing and policy through Gateway API resources. The project is licensed under Apache-2.0 and is developed in the open by a community of maintainers around the Envoy project.

Envoy Gateway runs entirely on your own infrastructure: there is no vendor cloud and no data flows to the project maintainers. The Envoy project is hosted by the Cloud Native Computing Foundation, part of the Linux Foundation (United States), and the project itself does not depend on a single commercial vendor. Where your traffic and data reside is therefore your own decision, for example in a European cloud or your own data centre. The open source code and the Apache licence limit lock-in. For support you can choose a commercial provider, whose origin and jurisdiction then determine the contractual exposure.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Envoy Gateway

Envoy Gateway is headquartered in the United States. US vendors fall under the CLOUD Act and FISA 702: US authorities can compel access to data, even when that data sits in a European data centre. That is the core of the jurisdictional exposure in our model.

Envoy Gateway hosts data outside the EU (US). Personal data therefore leaves the EU, which requires a transfer mechanism under the GDPR and pulls the data residency score down.

Envoy Gateway is open source. You can audit the source code, self-host the software and keep the encryption keys under your own control. Switching is easier because data and software are not tied to a single party.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Envoy Gateway together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
