FRRouting (FRR) is an open-source IP routing suite for Linux and Unix that implements protocols such as BGP, OSPF, IS-IS, RIP, PIM and LDP. It originated from the Quagga project and is installed on routers and servers that operators run themselves, as an alternative to proprietary routing software from vendors such as Cisco or Juniper. The project distributes software packages and source code and does not operate a hosted service.
FRR is a Linux Foundation Collaborative Project. The Linux Foundation is a US nonprofit organisation under section 501(c)(6) of the US tax code, so its governance and any legal obligations sit with a US entity, which a European operator should weigh. The code is licensed under the GNU General Public License version 2 or later, so organisations can run, modify and audit it on their own infrastructure.
