Garak (NVIDIA): sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

garak (Generative AI Red-teaming & Assessment Kit) is an open-source vulnerability scanner for language models, intended to do for LLMs roughly what nmap or Metasploit do for networks. The tool checks whether a model can be made to fail in unwanted ways, such as hallucination, data leakage, prompt injection, misinformation, toxic output and jailbreaks, using static, dynamic and adaptive probes. Supported targets include Hugging Face, OpenAI, Cohere, Groq, AWS Bedrock, NVIDIA NIM, local GGUF models and any REST endpoint. You install garak with pip and run it yourself, for example from the command line.

garak was created by Leon Derczynski and is now developed and supported by NVIDIA, a US company; the code is published under NVIDIA's GitHub organisation. The licence is Apache 2.0, so you can run the tool entirely under your own control and keep data within your own environment. No hosted service is required. The project is, however, steered by a single vendor, which is relevant for long-term dependency.

Is Garak (NVIDIA) one of many dependencies?

Score your whole stack in about three minutes. Free, no account needed.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Garak (NVIDIA)

Garak (NVIDIA) is headquartered in the United States. US vendors fall under the CLOUD Act and FISA 702: US authorities can compel access to data, even when that data sits in a European data centre. That is the core of the jurisdictional exposure in our model.

Garak (NVIDIA) hosts data outside the EU (self-host). Personal data therefore leaves the EU, which requires a transfer mechanism under the GDPR and pulls the data residency score down.

Garak (NVIDIA) is open source. You can audit the source code, self-host the software and keep the encryption keys under your own control. Switching is easier because data and software are not tied to a single party.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Garak (NVIDIA) together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
