geOrchestra: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

geOrchestra is free, modular and interoperable software for building a spatial data infrastructure (SDI). The project started in 2009 to meet the requirements of the European INSPIRE directive. Its core is a security proxy with single sign-on; around it sit modules such as GeoNetwork (metadata catalogue), GeoServer (map server), GeoFence (access control), GeoWebCache, MapStore (map viewer), Console (user, organisation and role management), Analytics and DataFeeder. Public bodies and research institutions use it to publish and share geographic data. You install it yourself on your own servers.

geOrchestra is a community project with no known legal entity. An independent Project Steering Committee sets the direction and votes on changes. It began with the spatial data infrastructure of Brittany, France, and has been on GitHub since 2012. The source code is under the GPL-3.0; the latest major release, 26.0.0, appeared in June 2026. Because you run the software yourself, your data stays on your own infrastructure and you do not depend on a single supplier.
