GINES (Geographisches INformations- und EntscheidungsSystem, the Geographic Information and Decision Support System) is a web-based GIS from GINES GmbH for spatial observation and sustainable planning. It brings spatial and time-related indicators together in one system, analyses and compares them statistically, and presents them as maps, charts and standardised data sheets. Further modules cover data query, data management with metadata and Excel and shapefile import, user management and translations. Cantonal departments for spatial planning, economic development, finance and statistics use it; the product originated in a ZHAW research project.
GINES GmbH is based in Au (ZH), Switzerland, which is not in the EU but is an EFTA country with an EU adequacy decision; no foreign parent is named. The vendor states that GINES is hosted on Swiss servers and is used as a web application in the cloud. For European public bodies it is a Swiss, non-US alternative to GIS platforms such as Esri ArcGIS.
