Henchman: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Henchman is a contract drafting solution for legal professionals. It helps lawyers draft and negotiate contracts and is known for making a firm's own precedents, held in its document management system, easy to find and reuse at clause level. According to iManage, it provides a drafting experience inside Microsoft 365, drawing on the firm's document management content and LexisNexis sources, and includes generative AI capabilities. It is delivered as software that works alongside Microsoft 365.

Henchman started as a Belgian company. LexisNexis announced its acquisition in June 2024, and Henchman is now part of the LexisNexis Lexis Create+ suite. Its customer base has therefore moved under the ownership of an international information-services group, which is relevant when assessing which legal jurisdiction and which parent company's policies apply to your data. The sources consulted do not state where Henchman hosts data. The software is not open source.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Henchman

Henchman is headquartered in BE and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data. The ultimate owner is based in GB. Foreign control undermines part of the certainty a European headquarters offers.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so Henchman scores best on data residency.

Henchman is closed source and hosted by the vendor. The encryption keys and the runtime sit with the vendor and switching requires data migration. Ask about bring-your-own-key, export options and open standards.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Henchman together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
