infoGrips GeoShop: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

GeoShop is a geodata server from infoGrips GmbH that publishes, distributes and sells geodata over the internet or an intranet. All data is stored on a central server in the vendor-neutral INTERLIS format. Users search, view and order data in a browser client and download it in common GIS and CAD formats such as Shapefile or DXF, converted automatically by the INTERLIS Tools. A built-in checker, iG/Check, can validate the quality of uploaded data. GeoShop comes in several editions, from a single-user test licence to an enterprise edition, and can be integrated into an existing IIS or Apache web server.

infoGrips GmbH is based in Winterthur, Switzerland, and says it is fully owned by its founders. The customer installs GeoShop on its own server, so the location and operation of the data are under the customer's control. The vendor separately runs hosted services such as its Checkservice; its servers moved to a new data centre in Winterthur in 2025. Switzerland is not in the EU but is an EFTA country with an EU adequacy decision.

Why digital sovereignty matters with infoGrips GeoShop

infoGrips GeoShop is headquartered in Switzerland and falls under Swiss law, including the revised Swiss data protection act. Switzerland is not an EU member, but the European Commission recognises its level of data protection as adequate. Its Swiss headquarters does not by itself bring it under US legislation such as the CLOUD Act.

infoGrips GeoShop runs on infrastructure you choose and control yourself. You decide where the data lives, including fully within the EU if you want — this is not a fixed hosting choice made by the vendor.

infoGrips GeoShop is closed source, but you run the software yourself on your own infrastructure. The encryption keys and the runtime therefore stay under your own control, though you cannot audit or modify the source code. Ask about export options and open standards to limit software-level lock-in.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs infoGrips GeoShop together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
