Instagram is a social networking service for sharing photos and short videos. Users post images, apply filters, add hashtags and locations, and share content through Stories and Reels. It also offers direct messaging and an Explore tab for discovering new accounts and content. The service launched as an iOS app in October 2010, was created by Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger, and is delivered entirely as a hosted service. There is no self-hosted version, and the software is not open source.
Facebook acquired Instagram in 2012, and the service is now owned by Meta Platforms, a US company. As a US-based provider, Meta is subject to US law, which a European organisation should weigh when it publishes or processes personal data through Instagram. The GDPR continues to apply to the processing of personal data of people in the EU. Meta runs its services in its own data centres, and users cannot set up their own instance. It is therefore sensible to keep an independent channel, such as your own website, alongside any presence on Instagram.
