iTowns is an open-source JavaScript library for displaying 3D geospatial data in web applications. Developers use it to add mapping and 3D visualisation features to web applications, with live browser examples and a starter project that show how this is done. iTowns is a library that the developer includes in their own web application; it is not a hosted service.
It is developed by IGN, the French national institute for geographic and forest information based in Saint-Mandé, together with CIRIL Group. The library is dual-licensed under CeCILL-B and MIT. Because the code is open and runs in the browser of the end user, an organisation controls the application it builds, but the map services it connects to determine where map data is processed. For organisations looking to replace proprietary 3D mapping SDKs, iTowns is an open alternative of European origin.
