Layer7 API Gateway is a Broadcom product that acts as a proxy between clients and back-end services and provides centralised management and security for an organisation's API traffic. According to the vendor material, the gateway is available in several form factors and connects applications across cloud, container or on-premises environments; container images run on Docker and Kubernetes. It is available standalone or as part of Layer7 API Management.
Broadcom is headquartered in Palo Alto, California, in the United States; the software is proprietary and not open source. Because the gateway can be installed in your own data centre or on infrastructure of your choosing, API traffic does not have to pass through a vendor-operated service. The gateway can optionally send product usage and system configuration data to Broadcom (telemetry). As the vendor is a US company, US jurisdiction (the CLOUD Act) deserves attention alongside the place where the gateway runs.
