LibreSign: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

LibreSign is a free, open-source electronic signature application for Nextcloud, the file-sharing and collaboration platform. It lets organisations sign and validate documents with digital certificates, offers QR-code document validation, hybrid signatures and batch signing through envelopes, and provides REST APIs for integration with other systems. The company states that it follows Brazilian ICP-Brasil standards. It is installed on the organisation's own Nextcloud server from the Nextcloud app store, and is aimed at lawyers, companies, cooperatives and public-sector bodies that want self-hosted control.

LibreSign is developed by LibreCode, a Brazilian IT cooperative. Its seat is therefore in Brazil, outside the EU and EEA, and no foreign owner applies. Because the software runs on the customer's own server, documents stay where the organisation hosts them. The website's privacy policy refers to both the Brazilian LGPD and the GDPR. The code is licensed under the AGPL-3.0, so a European organisation can audit it and run it on its own infrastructure. The maintainer itself is based in Brazil.

Why digital sovereignty matters with LibreSign

LibreSign is headquartered in BR, outside the EU. Contracts and data therefore also fall under non-European law. The GDPR applies through contractual terms, but in a conflict with local legislation you have less certainty than with a European vendor.

LibreSign hosts data outside the EU (OTHER). Personal data therefore leaves the EU, which requires a transfer mechanism under the GDPR and pulls the data residency score down.

LibreSign is open source. You can audit the source code, self-host the software and keep the encryption keys under your own control. Switching is easier because data and software are not tied to a single party.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs LibreSign together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
