LINBIT: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

LINBIT develops software-defined storage, high-availability and disaster-recovery software for Linux environments. At its core are DRBD, a distributed replicated block device that mirrors block devices between hosts transparently to applications, and LINSTOR, block-storage management software with cluster-wide volume management. Together they let you build replicated block storage for containers, virtualisation and bare metal, including for Kubernetes through the LINSTOR Operator. LINBIT sells certified binaries and support; the software runs in your own environment, including offline.

LINBIT HA-Solutions GmbH is based in Vienna, Austria; the company also lists LINBIT USA, LLC in Oregon. DRBD is free software under the GNU General Public License version 2. Because you host the software yourself, you decide where the data resides. Organisations should still review the support terms to see whether any remote access to their systems is involved.

Why digital sovereignty matters with LINBIT

LINBIT is headquartered in AT and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so LINBIT scores best on data residency.

LINBIT is open source. You can audit the source code, self-host the software and keep the encryption keys under your own control. Switching is easier because data and software are not tied to a single party.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs LINBIT together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
