LinkedIn is a social network for professionals and employers. Members create profiles, build connections, post content and articles, exchange messages, join groups and organise events. Job seekers post CVs and employers post vacancies, and its subsidiary LinkedIn Learning offers courses. LinkedIn was launched in 2003 and is delivered as a website and an app, solely as a hosted service: there is no self-hosted version, and the software is not open source.
LinkedIn has been owned by Microsoft since December 2016 and is headquartered in Sunnyvale, California (US). For members in the EU, the EEA and Switzerland, LinkedIn Ireland Unlimited Company is the data controller. According to its privacy policy, LinkedIn processes data both inside and outside the United States. As a subsidiary of a US company, LinkedIn is subject to US law, which a European organisation using the platform for recruitment or communication should weigh. Users cannot run their own instance. It is sensible to keep a channel of your own, such as your website or careers page, alongside LinkedIn.
