Linogate DEFENDO: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

DEFENDO is a family of internet gateways from Linogate GmbH that combines a firewall, VPN, proxies, virus scanner and anti-spam into one UTM (unified threat management) solution. It is aimed at small and medium-sized businesses, schools and other organisations, from a single internet connection to branch-office networks. Linogate supplies it as an appliance, offers a variant for medical practices (Praxis-Wächter) and builds OEM versions under partner brands. Third-party virus scanners, for example from Avira and WithSecure, are available as apps. Linogate sells only through resellers.

Linogate is based in Augsburg, Germany, was founded in 1998 and says it is self-financed; no parent company is named on its website. DEFENDO runs locally in your own network, so traffic stays under your control and no cloud connection is required. The manufacturer says its gateways contain no hidden backdoors, which is the vendor's own claim. For European organisations this is a firewall from a German manufacturer.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Linogate DEFENDO

Linogate DEFENDO is headquartered in DE and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data.

Linogate DEFENDO runs on infrastructure you choose and control yourself. You decide where the data lives, including fully within the EU if you want — this is not a fixed hosting choice made by the vendor.

Linogate DEFENDO is closed source, but you run the software yourself on your own infrastructure. The encryption keys and the runtime therefore stay under your own control, though you cannot audit or modify the source code. Ask about export options and open standards to limit software-level lock-in.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Linogate DEFENDO together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
