Lykon: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Lykon is a Berlin-based provider of at-home tests for nutrition and health. You take a sample at home, send it to a partner laboratory and receive your results together with personal recommendations and a nutrition plan. Results and plan are available through the website and an app for iOS and Android. The test kits can be combined to match different health goals.

Lykon is operated by LykonDX GmbH in Berlin, Germany, and is therefore subject to German and EU law. Its privacy notice names no foreign parent company. According to the company, data is pseudonymised and processed under the GDPR. The notice also states that the IT infrastructure of some partner laboratories and service providers may be located outside the EU, or that they may access data centres in the EU/EEA from a third country, with safeguards such as standard contractual clauses. The service is not open source. A European organisation offering the kits to employees should check, for each test, which laboratory and which processors are involved.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Lykon

Lykon is headquartered in DE and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so Lykon scores best on data residency.

Lykon is closed source and hosted by the vendor. The encryption keys and the runtime sit with the vendor and switching requires data migration. Ask about bring-your-own-key, export options and open standards.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Lykon together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
