ManageEngine Endpoint Central: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

ManageEngine Endpoint Central is a unified endpoint management and endpoint security platform that lets organisations manage devices, applications and users from a single console. It supports automated patching for Windows, macOS, Linux and third-party software, vulnerability detection, ransomware protection, software and hardware inventory, OS deployment, software distribution, mobile device management and remote troubleshooting. Supported platforms include Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, iPadOS, Android and ChromeOS. The cloud edition runs on a server in one of ManageEngine's data centres.

ManageEngine is a division of Zoho Corporation, an Indian company. For Europe, ManageEngine lists data centres in Amsterdam and Dublin, with separate data centres for the United Kingdom, and its European domains are operated by Zoho Corporation B.V. in Utrecht. Endpoint Central Cloud has a distinct Europe region. The parent company nevertheless remains outside the EU, so a European organisation should check which region its tenant uses and what the data processing agreement says about transfers. The product is not open source.

Why digital sovereignty matters with ManageEngine Endpoint Central

ManageEngine Endpoint Central is headquartered in IN, outside the EU. Contracts and data therefore also fall under non-European law. The GDPR applies through contractual terms, but in a conflict with local legislation you have less certainty than with a European vendor.

ManageEngine Endpoint Central hosts data in EU, OTHER. Exactly what stays within the EU — and what does not — is defined by the vendor's data processing agreement and sub-processor list, not by a setting you control yourself; check those documents for the precise scope, including backups, logs and support access.

ManageEngine Endpoint Central is closed source and hosted by the vendor. The encryption keys and the runtime sit with the vendor and switching requires data migration. Ask about bring-your-own-key, export options and open standards.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs ManageEngine Endpoint Central together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
