MapProxy is an open-source proxy for geospatial data. It caches data from existing map services, accelerates it, transforms it to other projections and serves it to desktop and web GIS clients. It is written in Python and distributed under the Apache License 2.0. Organisations use MapProxy to speed up map services without changing the source services, as an open alternative to proprietary caching functions in commercial GIS platforms.
The project is maintained by terrestris GmbH & Co. KG in Bonn, Germany. MapProxy is a software library without a vendor cloud service, so the organisation decides where the software and its data run, on its own servers or with a European hosting provider. The code is open source and can be reviewed, and no vendor cloud is part of the chain. For a European organisation this means control of its map infrastructure without dependence on a non-European vendor.
