Mave: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Mave is a video hosting platform from mave.io B.V. for organisations that want to publish video without tracking cookies. Teams upload and organise videos in folders, with encoding for different screens, automatic subtitles, embeds for websites and CMSs, a video player, a dashboard with viewing analytics and an API. According to Mave, it serves public sector, healthcare, education, publishers and agencies. Mave is delivered as SaaS; there is also an open-source version, Mave Core, which you can run on your own infrastructure.

Mave is based in the Netherlands. According to its subprocessor list, the application and the default video delivery for paid plans run at Scaleway in Paris, with video backups at Hetzner in Germany. Cloudflare is used as a CDN only when the customer enables it; with global distribution, assets may be processed outside the EU, in the US. Mave states that the service runs on European-owned infrastructure and does not use tracking cookies. Because of the self-hostable core, European organisations can keep control of data and infrastructure entirely in their own hands if they wish.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Mave

Mave is headquartered in NL and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so Mave scores best on data residency.

Mave is closed source and hosted by the vendor. The encryption keys and the runtime sit with the vendor and switching requires data migration. Ask about bring-your-own-key, export options and open standards.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Mave together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
