Expanse is the electronic health record (EHR) platform of MEDITECH, the company formally named Medical Information Technology, Inc. It is designed for health systems of different sizes and covers care settings such as acute care, emergency departments, mental health, and home care and hospice. The platform brings together patient data from inside and outside an organisation and adds AI-driven insights. MEDITECH also offers it as a subscription called MEDITECH as a Service, which the vendor describes as cloud-hosted.
MEDITECH is headquartered in Westwood, Massachusetts, in the United States. Its SEC filings state that no public trading market exists for its common stock. As a US company it is subject to US law, including possible US government access requests, which matters for European hospitals with strict control requirements. The vendor says patient data can be hosted on Google Cloud Platform as part of the subscription, but the data-centre regions are not stated on its pages. European organisations should therefore clarify where data is stored, who can access it, and which transfer safeguards apply.
