Microcks: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Microcks is an open-source, cloud-native tool for API mocking and testing. From OpenAPI and AsyncAPI specifications, gRPC/Protobuf definitions, GraphQL schemas, SOAP, Postman collections and SoapUI projects, it generates live mocks of synchronous and event-driven APIs, and it reuses the same artefacts to run contract conformance and non-regression tests against real implementations. Teams use it to simulate dependencies during development and to automate checks in CI/CD pipelines such as Jenkins, GitHub Actions and Tekton through a command-line client. Microcks is delivered as container images and runs on Kubernetes, on premises, in the cloud or on a developer laptop.

Microcks is a Cloud Native Computing Foundation project, accepted in June 2023 and at the incubating maturity level since May 2026. Trademarks and copyright are held by the Linux Foundation, and no single company controls the project. It is licensed under Apache 2.0 and the project describes no vendor-operated hosted service, so your organisation runs it where it chooses, including entirely within the EU, and keeps full control over the specifications and test data it processes.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Microcks

Microcks is headquartered in the United States. US vendors fall under the CLOUD Act and FISA 702: US authorities can compel access to data, even when that data sits in a European data centre. That is the core of the jurisdictional exposure in our model.

Microcks hosts data outside the EU (self-host). Personal data therefore leaves the EU, which requires a transfer mechanism under the GDPR and pulls the data residency score down.

Microcks is open source. You can audit the source code, self-host the software and keep the encryption keys under your own control. Switching is easier because data and software are not tied to a single party.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Microcks together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
