Cohesity NetBackup: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Cohesity NetBackup is a backup and recovery platform for large enterprises. It protects data in on-premises and cloud environments, is delivered as software and also on appliances, and includes features such as immutable backups, encryption and malware scanning of backup images. NetBackup originated at Veritas; Cohesity took over the NetBackup business in December 2024 and says it will keep supporting existing products from both companies for years to come. Backup Exec and a few other Veritas products were not part of the deal and went to a separate company, Arctera.

Cohesity, Inc. is a privately held company headquartered in Santa Clara, California (US), so the vendor is subject to US law, including the CLOUD Act. Because NetBackup runs as software or an appliance on your own infrastructure, you decide where the backup data is stored, for example in a European data centre. Encryption with your own keys limits exposure, but the vendor, its updates and its support channel remain American. A European organisation should weigh that when choosing.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Cohesity NetBackup

Cohesity NetBackup is headquartered in the United States. US vendors fall under the CLOUD Act and FISA 702: US authorities can compel access to data, even when that data sits in a European data centre. That is the core of the jurisdictional exposure in our model.

Cohesity NetBackup runs on infrastructure you choose and control yourself. You decide where the data lives, including fully within the EU if you want — this is not a fixed hosting choice made by the vendor.

Cohesity NetBackup is closed source, but you run the software yourself on your own infrastructure. The encryption keys and the runtime therefore stay under your own control, though you cannot audit or modify the source code. Ask about export options and open standards to limit software-level lock-in.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Cohesity NetBackup together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
