NIC.LV DNS Firewall: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

The NIC.LV DNS Firewall is a free service that protects users against harmful websites, such as fake banking pages, fraudulent trading platforms and sites that spread viruses. A user who tries to open a blocked site is redirected to a safe landing page. NIC.LV provides the service together with CERT.LV, Latvia's IT security incident response institution, which maintains the threat database and also covers attacks aimed specifically at Latvia. Users of the recursive DNS server cache.nic.lv receive the firewall automatically; others set NIC.LV's DNS addresses in their device settings.

NIC.LV is based in Riga, Latvia, so the service is run by an EU-based party with no non-European parent company. The resolver supports DoH and DoT and validates DNSSEC. The service pages say nothing about query retention or where the servers are located. The service is aimed at Latvian users and organisations, and the blocklist is curated by a public authority, which is worth bearing in mind if you consider using it outside Latvia.
