NodeBB is open-source community forum software with a responsive design, permissions per category, topic tags, built-in chat, plugins and single sign-on. It supports ActivityPub, so forum posts can be followed from other fediverse services. Organisations that currently run community discussions on Reddit or Facebook Groups can use it as a replacement.
NodeBB is published under the GPL-3.0 licence and developed by NodeBB, Inc., a company based in Toronto, Canada. Organisations can run the software on their own servers or order a hosted forum from the company. The company offers a data protection addendum and states that it has taken steps to make NodeBB compliant with the GDPR. The website does not state where hosted forums store their data, so a European organisation considering that option should ask for it in writing. Canada is outside the EU and the EEA. In a self-hosted installation, forum data stays under the operator's control.
