osquery: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

osquery is an open-source framework for operating-system instrumentation and monitoring. It presents Windows, macOS and Linux as a relational database that you can query with SQL, for example to examine processes, installed software, network connections or users. The osqueryd component runs as a background daemon and executes scheduled queries, while osqueryi offers an interactive console for incident response and troubleshooting. osquery is installed by the organisation itself and forms the basis of various endpoint and security products. It is an open alternative to the built-in inventory and reporting functions of commercial endpoint management tools.

The project was developed by Facebook and has been part of the osquery Foundation within the Linux Foundation, a US non-profit, since 2019. The code is on GitHub under the Apache-2.0 and GPL-2.0 licences. The maintainer does not run a cloud platform: data is collected on your own systems and stays there unless you forward it to a logging platform of your own. For European organisations this means control over the data flow, while the project's governance sits in the United States.

Why digital sovereignty matters with osquery

osquery is headquartered in the United States. US vendors fall under the CLOUD Act and FISA 702: US authorities can compel access to data, even when that data sits in a European data centre. That is the core of the jurisdictional exposure in our model.

osquery hosts data outside the EU (US). Personal data therefore leaves the EU, which requires a transfer mechanism under the GDPR and pulls the data residency score down.

osquery is open source. You can audit the source code, self-host the software and keep the encryption keys under your own control. Switching is easier because data and software are not tied to a single party.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs osquery together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
