m23 is an open-source system for installing and managing Linux clients over the network. It supports Debian, Ubuntu (including Xubuntu and Kubuntu) and Linux Mint and is operated through a web interface. The project is aimed at schools, institutions and companies that need to roll out and maintain many workstations: operating-system installation, software distribution and management from a single server. It is an open alternative to commercial management software such as Microsoft Configuration Manager for Linux workstations. m23 is installed and operated by the organisation itself.
m23 is developed by an independent software developer in Kiel, Germany, who also offers support, training and consulting around m23. There is no cloud platform operated by the vendor: the server runs on your own infrastructure, so management data does not leave your environment. The software is distributed under the GPL (versions 2 and 3). For European organisations that want to manage Linux workstations under their own control this is a fitting option; it does require in-house administration, and no large company or foundation stands behind the project.
