OVHcloud: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

OVHcloud offers Object Storage as an S3-compatible cloud service, alongside backup products. It supports features such as Object Lock, versioning, server-side encryption, lifecycle rules and replication. There are storage classes for different needs: Multi-Zone, which spreads data across three geographic zones, Single-Zone, and a Local Zone for low latency and data-residency requirements, with archive classes up to tape. The service is consumed as public cloud through a web console and API, and OVHcloud lists integrations with backup software such as Veeam, HYCU, Veritas and NetBackup.

OVHcloud is a French company, founded in 1999, headquartered in Roubaix and listed on Euronext Paris. It operates data centres in Europe and elsewhere, including Canada and the United States, so for European data you select a European region. The storage service itself is proprietary, not open source. According to OVHcloud, Object Storage meets ISO 27001, 27017, 27018 and 27701. The pages consulted name no parent company.

Why digital sovereignty matters with OVHcloud

OVHcloud is headquartered in FR and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so OVHcloud scores best on data residency.

OVHcloud is closed source and hosted by the vendor. The encryption keys and the runtime sit with the vendor and switching requires data migration. Ask about bring-your-own-key, export options and open standards.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs OVHcloud together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
