Owncast: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Owncast is free, open-source software for running your own live stream. It combines a streaming server with a web player and built-in chat, including moderation, custom emotes and user authentication, and supports Fediverse platforms such as Mastodon through ActivityPub. You can use your own domain and branding, including custom CSS, and broadcast with tools such as OBS Studio, Streamlabs or FFmpeg. It is written in Go with a React front end and installs through an installer, a single file or a Docker container.

Owncast is self-hosted software: you run it on a server, with a cloud provider or on a home computer of your choice. Where stream, chat and viewer data end up therefore depends on your own setup. The code is published on GitHub under the MIT License and maintained by the Owncast Project. The project does not offer a hosted service itself, although hosting providers can install Owncast for you. For a European organisation, an EU-based host or its own infrastructure keeps the whole chain under its own control.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Owncast

Owncast is headquartered in the United States. US vendors fall under the CLOUD Act and FISA 702: US authorities can compel access to data, even when that data sits in a European data centre. That is the core of the jurisdictional exposure in our model.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so Owncast scores best on data residency.

Owncast is open source. You can audit the source code, self-host the software and keep the encryption keys under your own control. Switching is easier because data and software are not tied to a single party.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Owncast together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
