PacketFence is a network access control (NAC) system. It governs who or what may join a wired or wireless network, using a captive portal for registration, 802.1X authentication and layer-2 isolation. Organisations use it to identify and segment devices and users. PacketFence can be installed as server software on your own infrastructure, or taken as a managed cloud service.
The project started at the Canadian company Inverse; since the 2021 acquisition it has been developed by Akamai Technologies, headquartered in Cambridge, Massachusetts, US. Akamai says it will continue to develop and support PacketFence; the project site presents the self-hosted version as free software, with a GPL-2.0 licence on GitHub and recent releases in 2026. Community support is free and paid support packages are available. If you run it yourself, network data stays on your own servers; for the managed cloud, the hosting location is not stated on the site.
