PeerTube is free, federated video hosting software developed by the French non-profit Framasoft. You install PeerTube on your own web server and so run your own video platform, similar to YouTube. Each platform is managed and moderated by its owner. Through ActivityPub, independent platforms can connect with each other and with tools such as Mastodon, and with WebRTC viewers share video delivery among themselves, which reduces server load. The software includes playlists, channels, livestreaming via RTMP, plugins, themes and moderation tools. Framasoft states that PeerTube shows no ads and does not track users.
The code is licensed under AGPL-3.0, so you can inspect and run the source yourself. Framasoft is based in France and hosts only two platforms itself (framatube.org and peer.tube) and one search index; everyone else using PeerTube chooses where it is hosted. An instance with a European hosting provider or on your own servers therefore keeps data within the EU. For a European organisation the key point is that EU hosting depends on whoever operates the instance.
