Phobos (Parallel Heterogeneous OBject Store) is server software for managing very large volumes of data across different storage media, from SSDs to tape. It is aimed at data centres and compute facilities with large datasets on inexpensive media. Phobos consists of a daemon on each node, a daemon for tape libraries and a command-line tool for managing drives, media and objects. For tapes it uses the open LTFS format, and it keeps its metadata in a PostgreSQL database.
Phobos is developed by CEA/DAM, part of the French Commissariat à l'énergie atomique et aux énergies alternatives, a public research organisation. The source code, released under the LGPL 2.1, is on GitHub and the project is active: version 3.4.1 appeared in October 2026. Because you install Phobos and run it on your own systems, the stored data stays under your control; the developer does not offer a hosted service. It is a niche product for HPC and archive environments, and is mainly relevant as an open option alongside proprietary tape and archive software.
