Pixelfed is free open-source software for sharing photos, comparable to Instagram but without algorithmic filtering. It uses the ActivityPub protocol and is therefore part of the fediverse: users of a Pixelfed server can interact with platforms such as Mastodon, PeerTube and Friendica. Pixelfed is built with Laravel. The software is released under the AGPL licence and was created by Daniel Supernault.
There is no single central service holding all data: any organisation or community can run its own server, with Docker Compose as the recommended method, and so decides where the data is hosted. Hosting location and legal environment therefore depend on the server chosen. The developer is based in Canada, outside the EU. For a European organisation, self-hosting on its own or European infrastructure is the most direct route to full control over the data, while federation still allows contact with external servers.
