TRAVIC: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

TRAVIC is a PPI product family for the payments of banks and their corporate customers. It covers customer channels and interfaces such as EBICS clients and APIs, retail and corporate channels and push services; core processing with a payment hub and business control; and interbank connections. Standard services such as TRAVIC-Payments-as-a-Service, EBICS-as-a-Service, Instant-Payments-as-a-Service and Request-to-Pay-as-a-Service let financial institutions outsource operation. According to the vendor, solutions are delivered on-premises or as a cloud service operated by PPI.

PPI AG is headquartered in Hamburg, Germany, and, according to its website, majority-owned by the founding family; PPI Schweiz GmbH in Zurich is the group's Swiss unit. The website does not state where the as-a-service offerings are hosted. A bank or payment institution should therefore ask for the hosting location, subprocessors and data-processing terms. With on-premises use, operation and data stay with the institution itself.

Why digital sovereignty matters with TRAVIC

TRAVIC is headquartered in Germany and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data.

TRAVIC runs on infrastructure you choose and control yourself. You decide where the data lives, including fully within the EU if you want — this is not a fixed hosting choice made by the vendor.

TRAVIC is closed source, but you run the software yourself on your own infrastructure. The encryption keys and the runtime therefore stay under your own control, though you cannot audit or modify the source code. Ask about export options and open standards to limit software-level lock-in.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs TRAVIC together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
