BLIK: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

BLIK is a mobile payment system in Poland, launched in 2015. It supports fund transfers between customers, banks and clearing agents and is used for payments in physical stores at terminals and cash desks, for online payments, at ATMs and cash deposit machines, for person-to-person transfers to a phone number and, since 2025, for recurring payments. BLIK Pay Later, a deferred-payment service, debuted in 2024 at two banks. Besides Poland, BLIK operates in Slovakia and Romania.

The BLIK brand belongs to Polski Standard Płatności, a Polish company that became a joint stock company in November 2024. The system was set up in 2013 by six banks, and Mastercard became a shareholder in 2020. In 2023 the National Bank of Poland classified BLIK as a significant retail payment system. The sources consulted do not state where data is hosted. BLIK is not open source. For European organisations, BLIK is mainly relevant when selling to Polish consumers.

Why digital sovereignty matters with BLIK

BLIK is headquartered in PL and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so BLIK scores best on data residency.

BLIK is closed source and hosted by the vendor. The encryption keys and the runtime sit with the vendor and switching requires data migration. Ask about bring-your-own-key, export options and open standards.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs BLIK together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
