PxWeb: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

PxWeb is software that statistical offices and other organisations use to publish statistics as interactive tables on the web. The data can come from PX files or from an SQL database. The current generation, PxWeb 2, consists of a new user interface and PxWebApi 2, an API that lets other applications retrieve the statistics too. You install PxWeb as server software, for example on IIS, or try it out with Docker.

PxWeb is developed by two public bodies: Statistics Sweden (SCB) and Statistics Norway (SSB). The source code of PxWeb 2 is on GitHub, in the PxTools organisation, under the Apache-2.0 licence. Because you run PxWeb on your own servers, the published statistics and the configuration stay under your own control; no hosted service from the developers is needed. The documentation at pxtools.net has separate installation guides for PxWeb 2 and PxWebApi 2.

Why digital sovereignty matters with PxWeb

PxWeb is headquartered in SE and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so PxWeb scores best on data residency.

PxWeb is open source. You can audit the source code, self-host the software and keep the encryption keys under your own control. Switching is easier because data and software are not tied to a single party.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs PxWeb together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
