pygeoapi is a Python server that implements the OGC API family of standards, so organisations can publish geospatial data as web APIs with OpenAPI documentation and GeoJSON or HTML output. It is configured through a plugin framework and installed with pip, git or the official Docker image. It suits organisations that want to expose their data through open standards rather than a proprietary map-service API. The project distributes downloadable software that runs on the organisation's own infrastructure.
pygeoapi is an OSGeo community project released under the MIT licence. The OSGeo Foundation is a not-for-profit organisation under United States law and also has a Netherlands legal entity. The project does not offer a hosted service of its own; organisations deploy the server themselves and decide where the data is stored. An organisation that runs the server on European infrastructure does not send data to a service operated by the project. Anyone using a demonstration instance or an external deployment should check where that service stores data and under which contract.
