Qumulo: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Qumulo provides a file data platform for large volumes of unstructured data. The platform includes Qumulo Core, a distributed data operating system, and Cloud Native Qumulo for use in the cloud, together with features for caching, search and ransomware protection. Organisations use it for file storage in their own data centre, at the edge and with public cloud providers. It runs on partner hardware, on standard x86 servers, or on AWS, Azure and Google Cloud.

Qumulo is a privately held company headquartered in Seattle, United States, and is subject to US law. Because the software runs on your own infrastructure or in your own cloud environment, you decide where the files are stored, for example exclusively in a European data centre. The software is not open source. In its privacy notice, Qumulo refers to the Data Privacy Framework for transfers from Europe; a data processing agreement is not mentioned there.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Qumulo

Qumulo is headquartered in the United States. US vendors fall under the CLOUD Act and FISA 702: US authorities can compel access to data, even when that data sits in a European data centre. That is the core of the jurisdictional exposure in our model.

Qumulo runs on infrastructure you choose and control yourself. You decide where the data lives, including fully within the EU if you want — this is not a fixed hosting choice made by the vendor.

Qumulo is closed source, but you run the software yourself on your own infrastructure. The encryption keys and the runtime therefore stay under your own control, though you cannot audit or modify the source code. Ask about export options and open standards to limit software-level lock-in.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Qumulo together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
