Rebelle: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Rebelle is a digital painting application that simulates natural media such as oils, acrylics, watercolours and dry media like pencils and pastels. It simulates pigment mixing, oil thickness and watercolour diffusion, among other things, and offers brushes, layers and masks, a ruler and perspective tool, symmetry and time-lapse recording of the painting process. The Pro edition adds further features, including PSD import and export. Rebelle is a standalone desktop application for Windows and macOS with a perpetual licence.

Rebelle is developed by Escape Motions, s.r.o., based in Piešťany, Slovakia. The software is installed locally; an internet connection is needed for activation. According to the privacy policy, the software sends registration details, IP address and software version, among other things, and usage analytics can be switched off in the settings. Payments go through FastSpring as merchant of record, and website and forum data are held with Exohosting (Slovakia) and HostHatch (USA). Rebelle is not open source.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Rebelle

Rebelle is headquartered in SK and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data.

Rebelle runs on infrastructure you choose and control yourself. You decide where the data lives, including fully within the EU if you want — this is not a fixed hosting choice made by the vendor.

Rebelle is closed source, but you run the software yourself on your own infrastructure. The encryption keys and the runtime therefore stay under your own control, though you cannot audit or modify the source code. Ask about export options and open standards to limit software-level lock-in.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Rebelle together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
