Reddit is a social news and discussion platform. Registered users submit links, text, images and videos, which other members upvote or downvote; popular posts rise to the top of their community and, with enough votes, to the front page. Content is organised in user-created communities called subreddits, each moderated by volunteer moderators, while Reddit's own staff handle site-wide administration. It is delivered as a vendor-hosted web service and is not open source.
Reddit is headquartered in San Francisco, California, and has been listed on the New York Stock Exchange since its March 2024 public offering. As a US company it falls under US jurisdiction, including the CLOUD Act, which can reach data held by US providers wherever it is stored. European organisations using Reddit for community engagement should read its privacy policy to see where data is stored and how it is transferred outside the EU.
