Redpanda is a streaming data platform that is compatible with the Kafka API. It moves data in real time between systems and is used by engineering and data teams for event streaming, data pipelines and AI workloads. It can be run as Self-Managed software on your own infrastructure with the Redpanda broker and rpk command-line tool, or as Redpanda Cloud, available as Serverless or as bring-your-own-cloud (BYOC).
Redpanda is developed by Redpanda Data, Inc., based in San Francisco, California, so it is a US company subject to US law, including the CLOUD Act. The Community Edition is source-available under the Business Source License, which does not allow offering Redpanda as a commercial streaming service to others, and each code merge converts to Apache 2.0 four years later. The Enterprise Edition adds features such as tiered storage, audit logging and role-based access control under the Redpanda Community License and requires a licence key.
