Restic is a modern backup program that runs as a single executable, with no server or complex setup. It works on Linux, BSD, macOS and Windows and can write backups to many types of storage, both self-hosted and online services. It transfers only the changed parts of files and uses cryptography in every part of the process. It also helps you verify that your files can actually be restored. Restic is written in Go and developed and distributed through GitHub.
Restic is free and open-source software under the BSD 2-Clause licence. There is no vendor behind the project that hosts your data: the program runs on your side and you choose the storage backend. Where your backups are located therefore depends entirely on that choice, for example your own server or a European storage provider. The project website names no company or parent organisation. For a European organisation this means there is no vendor dependency or foreign owner in the service itself, while the source code can be fully inspected.
