SAGA GIS, the System for Automated Geoscientific Analyses, is a geographic information system for editing and analysing spatial data. Its functions are organised as modules covering vector, table, grid and image data, including grid interpolation, georeferencing and map projections, image classification, geostatistics such as kriging, and terrain analysis such as hydrology and morphometry. Users can work through the graphical interface or script the modules from shell, Python or R.
SAGA is developed in the Physical Geography working group of the University of Hamburg, Germany, where the project is based. As a university research project rather than a commercial vendor, it has no vendor-hosted cloud service and no foreign parent company. The software is free and open source under the GNU General Public License version 2 and the Lesser General Public License version 2, so a European organisation can install, audit and run it entirely on its own infrastructure and keep control of its geodata processing.
