Scality: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Scality develops object and file storage software. RING is scale-out storage for enterprise data and large cloud-scale environments, and ARTESCA is an object store aimed at backup use cases that works with major backup applications. Both offer S3-compatible interfaces. The software is deployed on the customer's own hardware or in a private cloud. The vendor states that organisations decide where their data lives and that its products have no forced cloud dependencies.

Scality was founded in 2009. Its privacy policy states that the group is held by Scality, Inc., based in San Francisco, so the group seat is in the United States. The French company Scality S.A. in Paris acts as controller and processor for users in the EU, and the group has further entities in the United Kingdom and Japan. The policy contains EU-specific provisions under the GDPR, with transfers covered by standard contractual clauses or binding corporate rules. No majority shareholder is named. For a European organisation the software can run on its own infrastructure, but the US parent remains part of the assessment.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Scality

Scality is headquartered in the United States. US vendors fall under the CLOUD Act and FISA 702: US authorities can compel access to data, even when that data sits in a European data centre. That is the core of the jurisdictional exposure in our model.

Scality runs on infrastructure you choose and control yourself. You decide where the data lives, including fully within the EU if you want — this is not a fixed hosting choice made by the vendor.

Scality is closed source, but you run the software yourself on your own infrastructure. The encryption keys and the runtime therefore stay under your own control, though you cannot audit or modify the source code. Ask about export options and open standards to limit software-level lock-in.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Scality together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
