ScreenScape: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

ScreenScape is a cloud digital signage platform aimed at small and medium-sized businesses. Using an online media manager, it connects screens to content from sources such as Google Drive, Dropbox, Facebook and Instagram, and manages content across multiple screens. It is delivered as SaaS.

ScreenScape comes from Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, Canada. In January 2021 it was acquired by Spectrio, a company from Tampa, Florida; according to Spectrio, ScreenScape remains available under its own name for now. Canada is therefore the country of establishment and the United States is the parent's country, which is relevant to the CLOUD Act. Spectrio states in its privacy policy that its data centres are primarily in the United States and that it relies on the EU-US Data Privacy Framework and standard contractual clauses; that policy does not mention ScreenScape. The vendor names no ScreenScape-specific hosting location and publishes no data processing agreement. European organisations should agree these with the vendor in advance.

Why digital sovereignty matters with ScreenScape

ScreenScape is headquartered in CA, outside the EU. Contracts and data therefore also fall under non-European law. The GDPR applies through contractual terms, but in a conflict with local legislation you have less certainty than with a European vendor. The ultimate owner is based in US. Foreign control undermines part of the certainty a European headquarters offers.

ScreenScape hosts data outside the EU (OTHER). Personal data therefore leaves the EU, which requires a transfer mechanism under the GDPR and pulls the data residency score down.

ScreenScape is closed source and hosted by the vendor. The encryption keys and the runtime sit with the vendor and switching requires data migration. Ask about bring-your-own-key, export options and open standards.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs ScreenScape together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
