Microsoft SharePoint is a web-based collaboration and content management platform used mainly for intranets, document management and file sharing. It offers team sites and communication sites, co-authoring of documents, retention policies, sensitivity labels and the SharePoint Framework for custom solutions. Files stored in Microsoft Teams are kept in SharePoint sites. SharePoint is delivered as part of Microsoft 365 in the cloud, or as SharePoint Server, which an organisation runs on-premises itself. The product is not open source.
Microsoft is a US company and falls under US jurisdiction. Tenants with a sign-up location in the EU or EFTA are in scope for the EU Data Boundary, under which Microsoft has committed to store and process customer data in the EU and EFTA, with limited exceptions. The Multi-Geo add-on lets larger organisations place data in chosen regions per user; according to Microsoft, customers who use Multi-Geo are not in scope for the EU Data Boundary. Organisations that want full control over data location can run SharePoint Server on-premises, taking responsibility for securing and patching it themselves.
