Sketch: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Sketch is a design toolkit for digital products. Its core is a vector editor for macOS that also works offline, with stack layouts, nestable frames, templates and component libraries. It also offers prototyping with animations and interactions, an iOS app for viewing designs, prototypes that can be tested in a browser, and collaboration with shared workspaces, comments and co-editing. Developers can inspect files and export assets. The product combines an installed app with cloud services.

Sketch is provided by Sketch B.V., based in Eindhoven, the Netherlands. According to its privacy policy, personal data may be transferred to third parties outside the EEA, including in the United States, based on European Commission standard contractual clauses. For its Private Cloud option, Sketch says customers can choose hosting in the US or the EU. Sketch reports an ISO 27001-certified information security management system and compliance with the GDPR. The software is not open source.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Sketch

Sketch is headquartered in NL and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so Sketch scores best on data residency.

Sketch is closed source and hosted by the vendor. The encryption keys and the runtime sit with the vendor and switching requires data migration. Ask about bring-your-own-key, export options and open standards.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Sketch together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
