StorPool: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

StorPool develops software-defined block storage for those building public or private clouds, such as hosting providers, service providers and enterprises. The software pools the capacity of local NVMe, SSD and HDD devices in standard GNU/Linux servers into a single shared storage pool, using a distributed, shared-nothing architecture. Integrations exist with OpenStack, CloudStack, OpenNebula, Kubernetes and Proxmox VE, among others. Besides self-managed use, the website describes a fully managed service (STaaS) in which StorPool's own team monitors and maintains the storage.

StorPool has an office in Sofia, Bulgaria, as well as an office in Wilmington, Delaware (USA), listed under the name StorPool Storage Inc. The website names no owner or parent company. The software is proprietary, not open source. Because the software runs on your own servers, you decide where the data is located, for example in a European data centre. With the managed service, it is worth establishing where the storage is located and which entity is the contracting party.

Why digital sovereignty matters with StorPool

StorPool is headquartered in BG and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so StorPool scores best on data residency.

StorPool is closed source and hosted by the vendor. The encryption keys and the runtime sit with the vendor and switching requires data migration. Ask about bring-your-own-key, export options and open standards.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs StorPool together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
