Threads is a text-based social app from Meta, the company that also operates Instagram and WhatsApp. Users post short text updates of up to 500 characters or videos of up to five minutes, and can like, comment on, repost and share other people's posts. Threads requires an Instagram account, and the two services are closely linked. The service is delivered as a mobile app and as a website.
Threads is operated by Meta Platforms, Inc., a US company headquartered in Menlo Park, California and listed on the Nasdaq. Meta is therefore subject to US law, including the CLOUD Act. Threads launched in July 2023 but reached the EU only in December 2023, after a delay linked to privacy questions. The pages consulted do not state where Threads data is stored, and the privacy centre excerpt names no data centres and no EU controller. An organisation that needs EU-only hosting should check Meta's privacy documentation directly before relying on the service.
