Tracim: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Tracim is an open-source team collaboration platform. It combines file sharing and versioning, team communication, task and project management organised in spaces, and knowledge management and documentation. According to its makers it is designed for asynchronous work, including with external partners, and offers a REST API and plugin mechanisms. The interface is available in Arabic, English, French, German and Portuguese, among others. Tracim can run on your own servers or be obtained from its publisher as a service.

Tracim is published by Algoo, a French company from the Grenoble region that has worked with free software since 2015. The code is distributed under four licences: MIT for the backend, LGPL-3.0 for most frontend components and AGPL-3.0 for the agenda application. Note that the project page states Docker images of the latest versions are only available to paying customers. If you run Tracim yourself, files and conversations stay in your own environment. Besides the software, Algoo sells support subscriptions and a cloud service.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Tracim

Tracim is headquartered in FR and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so Tracim scores best on data residency.

Tracim is open source. You can audit the source code, self-host the software and keep the encryption keys under your own control. Switching is easier because data and software are not tied to a single party.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Tracim together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
