Tsung: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Tsung is an open-source load-testing tool that generates traffic from several machines against client-server applications, to measure how they scale. It supports HTTP, WebDAV, SOAP, MQTT, AMQP and XMPP, as well as database and directory protocols such as PostgreSQL, MySQL and LDAP. Teams run Tsung on their own machines or in their own infrastructure, which makes it an alternative to hosted load-testing services such as BlazeMeter.

The project is maintained on GitHub within the ProcessOne organisation and is licensed under the GNU General Public License version 2. According to its website, ProcessOne is based in Paris, France. The repository does not describe a hosted service, so test traffic and results stay wherever the user runs the tool. For a European organisation, the sovereignty question therefore concerns where the test infrastructure runs, rather than the data centres of a vendor.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Tsung

Tsung is headquartered in FR and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so Tsung scores best on data residency.

Tsung is open source. You can audit the source code, self-host the software and keep the encryption keys under your own control. Switching is easier because data and software are not tied to a single party.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Tsung together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
