Unbound is a validating, recursive and caching DNS resolver. It resolves domain names on behalf of clients, validates DNSSEC signatures and keeps an aggressive cache of validated answers to reduce queries to authoritative servers. It supports DNS-over-TLS and DNS-over-HTTPS so that clients can encrypt their queries, and Query Name Minimisation, which limits the information sent to authoritative servers. Unbound runs on Linux, BSD and macOS and needs only a few lines of configuration.
Unbound is developed by NLnet Labs, a non-profit public benefit organisation based in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, and it is released as open source under the BSD licence. There is no hosted service: you run it on your own servers or devices, so resolution, cache and logs stay under your control and no foreign parent company is involved.
